The "Golden Mean" Proportion Tool

Label and tool shown 3/4 size

Here's the ultimate answer to the problem of mastering the most difficult aspect of fly tying:

PROPORTION!

This is the only proportional scheme based on the nature's own formula which governs the proportions of many insects, certain plants, most animals and all human beings! The ancient Greeks knew it as the "Golden Section" or the "Golden Mean". It's defined as the division of a line into two unequal segments so that the small segment is to the large segment as the large segment is to the undivided line. The perfect proportion with nothing left over!

Mathemeticians call it the "Phi ratio" and the number is known as the constant "Phi" (1.6180339... )

Artists and designers have used the Phi Ratio at least since the Renaisance and one old painting pictured the artist's studio with double-ended dividers hanging on a wall. This tool is a miniature version adapted to the needs of the fly tyer.
