The Catch & Release Tool
| This handy tool has three useful functions.
 |
| It's a Perfection Loop Aid
| The loop-to-loop connection is a popular method of attaching the line to the leader. It is also a convienient way of attaching leaders that is easier than tying blood knots. The tricky part of tying the Perfection Loop is pulling the second loop down over the tag end and through the first loop, especially if the first loop is too small to reach through with the thumb and finger. Here's the answer! |
|
| It's a Hook Remover
| A fish can be released by trapping the eye of the hook (de-barbed of course) between the thumbnail and finger and turning the hook vertically with the point down. The fish simply falls off the hook. However, with hooks size18 and smaller it is practically impossible to do. That's when this tool really comes into it's own. Slide the wire, bend facing down, along the leader and under the hook until it engages the hook bend as in the photo. Without slack, trap the leader against the tool with your thumb.
As you push, the spring loaded plunger will retract, the tight leader between the fly and your thumb will slacken until just enough pressure is applied to remove the hook. As the hook comes free, the plunger will snap back to it's normal position and the leader will tighten to keep the fly from flying loose.

 The fly is size 20.
